Birthday Cake Gift Card Holder Assembly

Supplies

This card is super customizable with different textures and colors to match the birthday vibe of the recipient. I have listed the colors that I used to assemble the card featured in the video (the “lavender matcha” cake as I like to call it), but all you need are 5 different colors for the cake and plate, plus yellow for the candle flames, and white for the panel on the back.

  • Cream / butter yellow cardstock

  • Lavender cardstock

  • Green cardstock

  • Purple cardstock

  • Light grey cardstock

  • Yellow cardstock

  • Smooth white cardstock*

  • Glue (tape dots or tape runner are not recommended)

*There is an optional back panel for the gift card holder so that you can write (or use your machine to sketch!) a message for the recipient. I recommend using smooth cardstock for this piece and that you write your message before attaching it to the card. If you are using your machine to sketch the message, do the sketch operation before cutting so that the piece is still well stuck down to the mat while sketching.

Assembly Steps

  1. Locate the Pocket Piece. This is the piece that has the cake shape on one end and then a flap with score lines on the other end. Fold the two side flaps in towards the middle.

  2. Fold and crease the cake down over the flaps. Add glue to the flaps then glue the cake down to the flaps, making a pocket.

Set this piece aside to dry. You can put something heavy on it, like a stack of cardstock, to hold it down while drying.

  3. Locate the Cake Front piece. This is the piece that is just the shape of the cake. Glue the scalloped frosting piece to the bottom, lining up the edge.

  4. Glue the piece for the cake plate on top of the bottom part of the scalloped frosting.

  5. Glue the large icing drip to the bottom tier of the cake. Line up the sides and the top edge along the top of the cake tier.

  6. Glue the medium sized frosting with the triangular scallops to the Cake Front directly above the large green icing. The flat part of the frosting should bump up directly against the top of the icing.

  7. Glue the medium icing drips to the middle tier of the cake lining up the sides and top to the top of the tier.

  8. Glue the smooth lavender frosting piece directly above the icing for the middle tier. The flat bottom of the frosting should bump up directly against the top of the middle icing piece.

  9. Glue the small green icing drip piece to the top tier of the cake. Line up the sides and the top edge of the icing should be flush with top of the Cake Front piece.

  10. Glue the three birthday candle stripe pieces on top of the lavender card insert. Line up the sides and top to the edges of each candle.

  11. Glue the three yellow candle flames at the top of the candle stipes. The bottom of the flame will overlap the stripes a tiny bit.

  12. Layer the Pocket Piece in front of you so that the cake shape is to the table and the pocket is facing you. Glue the cake front down on top of the Pocket Piece.

  13. Glue the back panel with your birthday message onto the back side of the cake. Remember to use smooth cardstock and write your message before glueing for best results!

  14. Tuck the gift card into the two tabs on the candle insert.

Tip: If your gift card is too ridged or a little long, you can just tuck it into the bottom flap and leave the top flat behind the gift card.

  15. Slip the candle insert into the pocket in the cake!

Don’t forget that this card first perfectly in a standard 5x7 envelope for easy mailing or gifting.
